Ragas form the core of Indian Classical Music. With their characteristic aaroha (ascend) and avaroha (descend), and pakad (characteristic pattern), each raga is attributed to a particular time of day. While there are hundreds of raga permutations, some have become more popular than others, and form the basis of innumerable hindi songs and ghazals.
I got introduced to the world of ragas in 2008, almost by accident. While learning the Harmonium, almost entirely from YouTube videos (one such excellent resource is Set of 28 Harmonium Lessons), I realized that it is much easier to learn a song if you understand the basic raga of the song. While it is imperative to learn classical music from a guru, there is growing set of information on the web that provides an introduction to the depth and complexity of the subject of ragas. Most of the data here is gleaned from information available on the web. The notable references are mentioned below.
